Emotional Intelligence In The Workplace
Building Stronger Relationships Through Self-Awareness, Empathy, and Effective Communication
Building Stronger Relationships Through Self-Awareness, Empathy, and Effective Communication
Project Overview
This concept eLearning course was developed to demonstrate my instructional design process and eLearning development skills. Drawing on my experience in corporate environments, this course addresses common workplace challenges such as communication breakdowns, conflict, stress, and team collaboration.
Using realistic workplace scenarios, interactive decision-making activities, and opportunities for self-reflection, learners build practical emotional intelligence skills they can immediately apply on the job. The course focuses on developing self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills to improve workplace relationships, strengthen collaboration, and support a positive organizational culture.

Rather than presenting emotional intelligence as a theory alone, I designed this course around realistic workplace situations that professionals encounter every day. Using scenario-based learning, reflective activities, knowledge checks, and decision-making exercises, learners actively practice applying emotional intelligence skills in authentic workplace contexts. The course emphasizes behavior change by encouraging learners to reflect, make decisions, receive feedback, and immediately connect learning to their daily responsibilities.
The needs analysis identified several workplace performance challenges affecting communication, collaboration, and employee engagement. Stakeholder interviews, learner feedback, and performance data revealed that employees often struggled to manage emotions during high-pressure situations, communicate effectively during conflict, and build collaborative working relationships.
Additional findings showed inconsistent leadership behaviors, limited self-awareness, and difficulty demonstrating empathy during coaching conversations. These performance gaps indicated a need for practical, behavior-based learning rather than traditional information-focused training.
The learning experience was designed using a learner-centered, performance-based approach that encourages participants to apply emotional intelligence skills in realistic workplace situations. Rather than focusing on theory alone, the course incorporates scenario-based learning, guided reflection, decision-making activities, and immediate feedback to promote meaningful behavior change.
The instructional strategy emphasizes active participation by allowing learners to analyze workplace challenges, evaluate response options, and experience the consequences of their decisions in a safe learning environment. This approach increases engagement, strengthens knowledge retention, and builds confidence in applying emotional intelligence skills on the job.
This self-paced eLearning solution was developed that combines interactive learning with practical workplace application. The course uses realistic scenarios, knowledge checks, reflective exercises, and branching interactions to help learners strengthen self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.
Designed for today's workforce, the course is accessible across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices, allowing learners to complete training at their own pace while immediately applying new skills in their daily work environment.
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
Recognize emotional triggers and respond thoughtfully in workplace situations.
Apply self-regulation strategies to manage emotions during challenging interactions.
Demonstrate empathy through active listening and effective communication.
Build stronger workplace relationships by improving collaboration and interpersonal skills.
Resolve workplace conflicts using emotionally intelligent communication techniques.
Contribute to a more respectful, inclusive, and emotionally intelligent workplace culture.

Emotional intelligence is not simply about understanding emotions—it is about knowing what to do with that awareness. This quick-reference guide provides a simple six-stage framework to help you recognize what is happening, understand the emotion behind it, choose a thoughtful response, manage your reactions, communicate with intention, and reflect on the outcome.
Use this guide as a practical reminder when navigating challenging conversations, workplace conflict, stressful situations, or everyday interactions. Pause. Think. Choose your response. Small changes in how we respond can strengthen relationships, improve communication, and create a more positive workplace experience.

While the eLearning experience provides flexible, self-paced practice, an Instructor-Led Training (ILT) option was also designed to extend the learning through conversation, collaboration, and real-time practice.
The ILT transforms the concepts from the eLearning course into an interactive workshop where participants can discuss workplace challenges, practice difficult conversations, explore different perspectives, and receive feedback from a facilitator and peers.
The recommended approach is a blended learning experience: learners complete foundational eLearning content independently, then participate in an instructor-led session focused on application and practice.
The question for the organization becomes: Do employees simply need to understand Emotional Intelligence—or do they need an opportunity to practice it?
