Design Philosophy
My instructional design philosopy is shaped by years of experience as an instructor, trainer, and learning professional. I have seen firsthand that delivering information does not necessarily lead to learning—and learning does not automatically lead to improved performance.
That perspective influences every course I design.
Before deciding what a learner needs to know, I consider what the learner needs to do differently as a result of the learning experience. I design with the desired behavior, workplace application, and measurable outcomes in mind.
Whether I am developing an eLearning course, instructor-led training, microlearning experience, or performance support tool, my goal is the same: create learning that is relevant, engaging, practical, and designed to transfer beyond the training environment.

I use microlearning when the learning goal can be effectively addressed through short, focused experiences. Breaking complex information into smaller learning segments allows learners to concentrate on one concept or skill at a time while reducing cognitive overload.
Microlearning is particularly valuable when learners need information that can be quickly accessed, practiced, and applied on the job. It can also support reinforcement and spaced learning rather than relying on a single training event.
My goal: Deliver the right information in manageable pieces that learners can understand, remember, and apply.
Real workplace performance rarely involves simply recalling information. Employees must interpret situations, make decisions, communicate effectively, and respond to unexpected challenges.
Scenario-based learning allows learners to practice those skills in a safe environment. I use realistic situations to place learners in the types of decisions they may encounter on the job and give them an opportunity to think through the consequences of their choices.
My goal: Move learners from “I know the information” to “I know how to use it.”
Interaction should have a purpose. I don't add buttons, animations, or activities simply to make a course look more engaging.
I use interaction when it helps learners explore information, make decisions, practice a skill, receive feedback, or demonstrate understanding. Meaningful interaction turns learners from passive recipients of information into active participants in the learning experience.
My goal: Make learners think, decide, practice, and apply—not simply click through slides.
Why I Use a Standards-Based Approach
When learning must align with established standards, regulations, frameworks, or organizational expectations, I use those requirements as a foundation for course design. I translate them into clear objectives, relevant activities, and assessments that help learners understand what the standard means and how to apply it.
This approach can support educational standards, corporate policies, compliance requirements, workplace safety, professional practices, and initiatives such as parent engagement.
My goal: Create learning that is accurate, relevant, aligned, and designed for real-world application.

Frameworks I apply, principles that inform my design, and models I draw upon when appropriate. I don't believe one framework fits every learning challenge. I select and combine instructional design models and learning principles based on the audience, performance need, content, environment, and desired outcomes.
